The Northshore Hamilton Parkland is located near the mouth of the Brisbane River and built on the site of the city’s old wharves. UAP was commissioned to design and deliver a comprehensive art and design programme that included artwork commissions, café screens, pavement overlays, street furniture and Integrated functional elements
Artist Fiona Foley was commissioned to create sculptural play elements themed on native flora and fauna. Her collection of artworks function both as art pieces that appeal to the adult eye, and play items attractive to children.
A large area of concrete paving situated between the cafe and the Brisbane riverfront provided the canvas for a decorative graphic treatment by artist Jennifer Marchant. An intricate map, referencing Aboriginal and European histories, was sandblasted onto the concrete pavers, tracing a visual timeline across the site.
Finding inspiration in the robust, industrial materials found in commercial wharves, designer Kylie Bickle developed a suit of street furniture as well as a system of modular seats, benches and light boxes designed to integrate with the landscape.
UAP principal, artist Daniel Tobin created a functional and aesthetic artwork screen for the Parkland’s café. It allowed for optimal ventilation and a clever design solution for the camouflaging of the Café’s plant and equipment area.
