Jennifer Marchant’s map installation of Brisbane’s CBD and surrounds veils three elevations of a car park, creating a pedestrian viewpoint of the city. Landscape contours are based on past and present uses of the site. They wrap counter clockwise around the structure, progressively diminishing until only a thread-like expression on the northern elevation remains.
Marchant’s screens are both sculptural and functional. They help ventilate the sub-tropical car park, offering substantial cost savings to the developer by replacing costly mechanical systems. In doing so Landlines exemplifies the value and opportunity of integrated artworks.
Jennifer Marchant has over 26 years of experience in the field of graphic design. As an Australian based designer, Marchant has collaborated on several commissions including the History Walk for the Port of Brisbane, Brisbane; Reconciliation Place, Canberra; Circle on Cavill, Surfers Paradise; National Police Memorial, Canberra; and Radio 4BC, Brisbane, Australia. Marchant’s clear and vibrant graphic work sets her apart from other designers. Recently the artist was recognized with a commendation by the Design Institute of Australia for her Environmental Graphics on the Radio 4BC project.
