The Walama (to return) Forecourt was created as an
entry statement for Sydney International Airport greeting passengers as they
arrive in Australia. Internationally recognized Aboriginal artist Judy Watson's
work draws inspiration from the stories of the communities of the Sydney Region
and Maningrida in Arnhem Land. Sculptural screens reminiscent of Aboriginal
sedge grass fish fences create intimate spaces in the vast forecourt. Scattered
amongst the screens are cast bronze forms derived from the shapes of woven
dilly bags used to collect food, alluding to termite mounds and other spiritual
guardian forms.
Overhead soar 23 lit boomerangs created by Widajiri artist Brook Andrew. Andrew worked closely with the community at la Peruse and selected designs of local tribes as well us one from his homelands in Western Sydney.
