Artist Sebastian Di Mauro is well known for his use of artificial turf, a non-traditional sculptural material with 'pop' connotations. Undulant uses this faux turf to great effect; a hugely successful commission, it wittily transforms an otherwise non-descript public space, in this case the waiting room of a child and maternal health care centre, into a fun, interactive zone. The irreverence of the material has proven extremely popular with young and old audiences alike. Undulant's curved forms are an abstraction of a part of the Australian coastline and echo the human body, subtly bringing the natural world indoors. As the title suggests, the fake grass undulates up the wall and across the ceiling, enlivening this potentially clinical atmosphere.
